Bernard Trafford wins Radio 3 Breakfast Carol Competition

12:21, 2nd January 2018

Radio 3 listeners selected Bernard Trafford’s setting of Sir Christemas as the winner of the 2017 Breakfast Carol Competition.

The Oxford-based former headteacher’s composition was performed live on Radio 3 Breakfast by the BBC Singers, directed by David Hill, on 22 December, and was played throughout Christmas Day on the station.

The carols were judged and shortlisted blind by an expert panel which included David Hill (former chief conductor of the BBC Singers), Judith Weir (Master of the Queen’s Music and associate composer with the BBC Singers), Jonathan Manners (BBC Singers producer), Margaret Cameron (an alto with BBC Singers) and Griselda Sherlaw-Johnson (choral promotion manager with Oxford University Press).

David Hill, former chief conductor of the BBC Singers and chair of the judging panel, described the carol as a ‘worthy winner’, adding: ‘It’s catchy and well written with lots of energetic rhythm. [Bernard] has caught the spirit of the text superbly.’
