9:08, 17th January 2018

The Cambridge Academy of Organ Studies (CAOS) has announced its inaugural Competition for Student Organists.

The Competition will be held on  9 March 2018 in the Chapel of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where participants will perform a 25-30 minute programme on the Taylor & Boody and Flentrop organs, to include one of the following pieces by J.S. Bach:

– Prelude and Fugue in G major, BWV 541

– Chorale Prelude on ‘Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr’, BWV 662

– First movement (introduction and fugue) of the Concerto in D minor, BWV 596

The rest of the programme is free choice, noting that the jury will take into consideration the appropriateness of the choice of works for each instrument as well as interpretation and presentation.

First prize is £500 and a lunchtime recital at St John’s Smith Square, London.

Participants will be adjudicated by David Titterington (head of organ studies at the Royal Academy of Music, artistic director of St Albans International Organ Festival, and curator of the organ and organ programming at St John’s Smith Square) and Bine Bryndorf (president of the jury for the Odense International Organ Competition, Castle Organist at the Compenius organ of Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark, visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music).

The specification for both instruments can be found at www.sidneysussexchoir.org/chapel-instruments.

Entry is free.

On Saturday 10 March, Titterington and Bryndorf will give a masterclass in the Chapel. Applications are invited from any student who wishes to play or to attend as an observer. Repertoire appropriate to each organ may be presented.

Cost for students to participate in the masterclass is £10.

Both events will be open to the public; observers (competition) £10, (masterclass) £15; student observers no charge.

Applicants should enclose a recommendation from their organ teacher, college director of music or head of department with their application.

Applications for both for the competition and masterclass should be sent to CAOS secretary Andrew Johnson, andrewpj@waitrose.com. Contact: 01223 240026.
