The International Haydn Competition for Classical Lied and Aria 2018 will take place at Rohrau, the birthplace of the brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn, to commemorate the anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s death.

The competition, which is being organised by the state of Lower Austria and the Haydnregion Niederoesterreich (Haydn Region Lower Austria) Society, will take place 2-3 June 2018 at Schloss Rohrau and Haydn Geburtshaus Rohrau.

The competition is aimed at young singers specialising in Lied and opera and focuses on repertoire from the Vienna Classical era.

The jury will be chaired by Angelika Kirchschlager, and will also include Susanne Schmidt (opera director, Bregenz Festival), Daniela Spering (managing director, Orfeo Artist Management) and Claudio Osele (musical director, Le Musiche Nove).

The jury will judge the competitors in the categories of voice quality and voice technique, interpretation and musical presentation, diction and performance appeal.

Competitors must prepare at least seven Lieder and at least five arias must be prepared. Lieder must be by Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Pleyel, and arias must be by Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Ignaz Joseph Pleyel or Christoph Willibald Gluck; this choice must contain two arias from the operas Il mondo della luna and/or L´isola disabitata from Joseph Haydn.

The first prize winner will receive €8,000, with the second and third prize winners receiving €4,000 and €2,000 respectively. The competition will also award prizes for the best Lied interpretation, best aria interpretation and audience prize, each worth €1,500.
