Beethoven: Quartet in A minor, Op 132; Mendelssohn: Quartet in A minor, Op 1312:21, 21st September 2016

Refreshing, committed performances of two great works that share a dramatic key, and these excellent young players relish the drama herein. The Beethoven is earthy and bold, although the slow movement is rapt and utterly unsentimental. It is a new recording and sounds marvellous; the Mendelssohn comes from a Champs Hill set of Mendelssohn’s complete oeuvre from no fewer than ten quartets and is no less impressive.
