Classical musicians recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

A number of classical musicians have been recognised in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Sir Mark Elder CBE, music director of the Hallé, has been made a Companion of Honour. Composer and conductor George Benjamin CBE has been given a knighthood and Sarah Connolly CBE has been made a dame.

The baritone Gerald Finley was awarded a CBE, as was Colin McClatchie, vice-president of Scottish Opera, while OBEs went to double bass-player and Chineke! founder Chi Chi-Nwanoku, baritone and composer Roderick Williams, and Sandeep Virdee, founder and director of Darbar Arts Culture and Heritage Trust.

MBE recipients included Gillian Dinsmore (former vice-chair of Music in Hospitals UK and convenor of Music in Hospitals Scotland) and Claire Garnett (founder, Peebles Orchestra and Peebles Youth Orchestra).
