Radio 3 has announced its programming highlights for BBC Music Day (15 June), which this year will celebrate ‘The Power of Music’.

A special edition of Breakfast will see Clemency Burton-Hill reveal the names of the music legends who will have blue plaques dedicated to them.

Afternoon on 3 will be a performance of Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chenier  from the 2015 run at Royal Opera House Covent Garden, with  Jonas Kaufmann in the title role and  Eva-Maria Westbroek as Maddalena de Coigny, conducted by Antonio Pappano.

Suzy Klein will present a special edition of In Tune live from Hatfield House, a stately mansion on the site of Queen Elizabeth I’s childhood home. Bryn Terfel will perform live, and will talk to Sean Rafferty.

Radio 3 in concert will feature Thomas Søndergård and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Prokofiev’s Scythian Suite, and Ravel’s piano concerto in G with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet.

Six specially-commissioned monologues based on this year’s BBC Music Day theme ‘The Power of Music’ will be broadcast throughout the day.
