St John’s Smith Square announces Christmas Festival 201710:19, 19th October 2017
The 32nd Christmas Festival at St John’s Smith Square will take place 9-23 December.
The festival, which comprises 14 concerts, will open with the City of London Choir’s Carols by Candlelight, featuring festive classics, new favourites and audience participation.
The City Musick will make its festival debut, presenting traditional dance music and Christmas songs for Renaissance civic band.
Solomon’s Knot will perform Bach’s B minor mass, and the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge will present a programme of music dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Vox Luminis will juxtapose Bach’s Magnificat with Kuhnau’s setting, completing the programme with Pachelbel’s Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt (Shout for Joy to the Lord), and Ex Cathedra will present an evening of music and readings by candlelight.
Other ensembles performing as part of the festival include the Choirs of Christ Church Cathedral and New College, Oxford, The Tallis Scholars, and London Choral Sinfonia.
The event will conclude with two performances featuring the Orchestra of Enlightenment: Polyphony will perform Handel’s Messiah and the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge will sing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.
