Former Berlin Philharmonic concertmaster Thomas Brandis has died aged 81.
Born in Hamburg, Brandis became the first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic aged 26, serving in the position until 1983. He founded the Brandis Quartet in 1976.
A respected pedagogue, Brandis taught at the Berlin University of Arts, the Musikhochschule in Lübeck, and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His former pupils include a number of today’s Berlin Philharmonic violinists.
