David Bowman was for 20 years director of music at Ampleforth College where he still teaches. He was a chief examiner for the university of London Schools Examination Board (now Edexcel) from 1982 to 1998. David's publications include the London Anthology of Music (University of London Schools Examination Board, 1986), Sound Matters, (co-authored with Bruce Cole, Schott, 1989), Aural Matters (co-authored with Paul Terry, Schott, 1993), Aural Matters (co-authored with Paul Terry, Schott, 1994), Analysis Matters (Rhinegold, Volume 1 1997, Volume 2 1998) and numerous analytical articles for Music Teacher. He is a contributor to the Collins Classical Music Encyclopedia (2000) edited by Stanley Sadie and author of the Rhinegold Dictionary of Music in Sound (2002).

Michael Burnett lectures in music at the University of Surrey Roehampton where he has been involved in teacher training for almost 20 years. During that time Michael wrote and presented the BBC Schools radio programme Music Box for a period of ten years. He was also seconded to the Jamaica School of Music for three years. Michael's compositions and arrangements have been widely published. He is the author of three books in the Oxford Topics in Music series for 11- to 14- year-olds, and arranger of several song and instrumental collections for IMP. He was series editor of the secondary-level teaching resource Music File, published by Stanley Thornes (1991-1998), and regularly writes on music for the Times Educational Supplement.

Ian Burton is Music Development Manager for the City of Nottingham Education Department, and project co-ordinator for Musical Futures Nottingham. He has previously held posts in many areas of music education, including senior lecturer in music education at Huddersfield University, course leader for PGCE secondary-music at Bath Spa University College, and director of music in various comprehensive schools and colleges. Ian is a member of the QCA Music Development Group and carries out inspections for Ofsted. He has been principal examiner in composing for OCR A-level music and a subject adviser for AQA GCSE music. He has been involved with the development of music specifications for both GCSE and A level. Ian is co-author of the Rhinegold AQA and OCR GCSE study guides and is a contributor to Music Teacher magazine. He is active as a composer/arranger with particular interests in creating material for use in schools.

Bruce Cole is fellow in community music at the University of York, principal examiner in composition for Edexcel and has been a scrutineer for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. He has taught at most levels from preschool to postgraduate, and his work as a composer includes rock musicals, orchestral commissions and scores for film, television, theatre and dance. He is the author of The Composer's Handbook, the co-author (with David Bowman) of Sound Matters and a member of the Music Education Research editorial board.
