AS MUSIC HARMONY WORKBOOK
JUST PUBLISHED - OUT NOW!

This book is designed for the new GCE AS Music specifications to be examined from 2009
onwards, although it also provides a firm foundation for all students embarking on a study
of harmony. Its sequel, A2 Music Harmony Workbook, explores more advanced techniques and
is written to support the new A2 Music specifications first being examined in 2010. This
workbook will be published in January 2009.
Together, the two volumes form a thoroughly revised and expanded version of Hugh Benham's
highly successful earlier book, A Student's Guide to Harmony and Counterpoint and include
new exercises specifically designed for the A-level harmony requirements of the AQA,
Edexcel and OCR specifications.
Dr Benham doesn't presume that students will begin their studies for AS Music with a
detailed knowledge of either music notation or harmony. He begins by carefully explaining
matters such as the bass clef, intervals and how chords are formed, before going on to
discuss cadences, other harmonic progressions and part-writing. Topics are illustrated
with examples from a broad range of musical styles, and include frequent Activities which
students can use to test their understanding.
He then provides step-by-step guidance on the principal tasks required in AS Music harmony
tests. Each is dealt with in a progressive way, starting from short and simple examples
and including many tips, clear explanations of technical terminology and carefully-graded
exercises for practice. The AS Music Harmony Workbook provides an invaluable and
up-to-date resource for students working on harmony assignments, and one that is
specifically tailored to their study needs.
