Music Literacy Workbook
Written by Rebecca Berkley & Gavin Richards

The Music Literacy Workbook: Theory from Scratch is ideal for all students working with music theory and notation. The workbook offers students the opportunity to learn to read music notation starting from the fundamentals of pitch and rhythm, leading on to more advanced applications including understanding scales, harmony and modulation. Each chapter is differentiated to include material for students of all levels of prior experience and musical knowledge, so that the book can be used in a mixed ability class and also as an individual resource for students.
The workbook emphasises learning by doing. It includes practical aural and written exercises based on rock, pop, jazz and classical music. Many of the exercises can also be completed using music technology software. Throughout the book, students are encouraged to cross-reference their knowledge and learn how to speed-read notation.
The Music Literacy Workbook is suitable for anyone aged 11 upwards wanting to develop a firm grounding in music theory to grade 5 theory or GCSE level. This book also provides students with the grounding to progress to A Student’s Guide to Harmony and Counterpoint.
