Ivan Ilić signs to Chandos Records

9:50, 24th March 2017

Ivan Ilić has signed a new multi-album recording contract with Chandos Records.

The Serbian-American Paris-based pianist was previously signed with the French record label Paraty, a relationship which produced recordings of Debussy (2008), Godowsky (2012) and Feldman (2015), and has also recorded for American independent label Magnatune.

His first project with the label will be a series devoted to the solo piano works of Czech composer Antoine Reicha. Most of the composer’s solo piano music has not been recorded, and the manuscripts, kept in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, were published only recently.

The first volume will be released in September 2017, and will include the premiere recordings of Reicha’s Grande Sonate in C, the Sonate in F and Three Excerpts from Practische Beispiele. The recording is a co-production between Chandos, Swiss Radio RTS, and the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de Musique Romantique Française in Venice.

Remembering that one of his favourite recordings as an adolescent was Louis Lortie’s 1986 recording of Chopin Etudes on Chandos, Ilić said: ‘The sound was so warm, the playing so natural. I could not have imagined that 25 years later I would record for Chandos.’

He continued: ‘It is especially gratifying that our collaboration will begin with a Reicha series, as his substantial opus for piano is long overdue for a revival.’
