KEY STAGE 3 - ELEMENTS
TEACHER'S HANDBOOK

Due Autumn 2007

Elements is a suite of six books, five CD sets and five CD-ROMs that have been designed to support teachers in every aspect of Key Stage 3 Music. This book is the Elements Handbook. It has been designed to help you make best use both of this resource and of the individual skills and enthusiasms of you and your pupils. It offers teaching advice and acts as a guide to help you find what you need among the rest of the Elements suite.

The Handbook will assist you in designing your own courses of study from different lessons across the Elements suite: you can tailor make your lessons, responding to varying abilities within different classes and in different years.

In the Elements suite, you will find lessons that teach topics using a wide selection of music. There are lessons that focus on Miles Davis, Maxwell Davis, Tuvan throat singers, Ravi Shankar and Indian Music, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the Rite of Spring, Reich, Walton, Whitney Houston and Gershwin to name but a few.

The accompanying CDs and CD-ROM provide all the audio tracks and MIDI files you need for these lessons, along with film clips, images and audio loops for particular lessons. You will also find all the pupil’s pages saved on the CD-ROM as PDFs, so that you can print them out directly.

Elements includes five books of lesson plans. Each book takes as its focus an individual element of music, and offers a series of chapters that use that element as a path into different genres and areas of repertoire. Each book contains chapters on Classical, Electronic, Experimental, Film and Television, Jazz and Blues, Rock and Pop, and World Music. Each chapter provides 12 progressively arranged lessons that offer a combination of listening exercises, composing projects and performance opportunities. Each lesson gives you a teacher’s page and a facing pupil’s page.

This adds up to more than 400 carefully targeted and interlinked lessons. There is also advice about good practice with music technology at every stage. The design of the five books will support you in moving between different genres – providing an end to no-go areas!

Elements has been carefully written to enable you to assess and build on what your new Year 7 pupils have learned in Key Stages 1 and 2. It provides an inexhaustible wealth of lesson plans and ideas for adapting and personalising. It also shows how to use Key Stage 3 to build a secure foundation for potential GCSE pupils.
