It’s not often you get Ray Davies of the Kinks sharing a programme with members of the London Symphony, the Ballet Boyz, percussionists O Duo, Clare Rutter and Henry the Piano. So let’s hear it for the wonderful Grange Park Opera, packing in a variety show in between this year’s offerings of Norma, Cavalli’s Eliogabalo, The Cunning Little Vixen and Rigoletto. (Season ends 14 July: book now to avoid disappointment.) Hang about, you say. The Royal Philharmonic playing to the horses at Aintree, the BBC Symphony gracing a Shepherd’s Bush shopping mall, Grange Park turning into Sunday Night at the London Palladium – whatever happened to proper concerts? I know, I know. And certainly my new-found enthusiasm for variety does not yet extend to early morning radio...
