Editorial

THERE WAS A TIME when a pianist aspired to be just that: a pianist. Pure and simple. Concert hall recitals, tours, recordings, perhaps some teaching, possibly write a book or two. Things have changed. It could have something to do with a general cultural shift within the arts towards greater inclusiveness and a stronger spirit of philanthropy, but in recent years more and more musicians - among them some of the world’s most high-profile pianists – have been taking time out from their concert schedules to give free performances, workshops and classes in areas of the community where people may never have even heard classical music before, let alone listened to a piano recital.
