Gita Kadambi appointed as general director of Finnish National Opera and Ballet3:29, 18th May 2017
Finnish National Opera and Ballet has appointed Gita Kadambi as general director. She will assume the position in January 2018, replacing Päivi Kärkkäinen, taking on the management and leadership of the entire organisation.
Kadambi has been general manager of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013. Previous positions include HR partner and manager at the Finnish Broadcasting Company, orchestra manager for the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and various other roles at the Finnish National Opera and the Savonlinna Opera Festival.
In a statement, the company said that Kadambi ‘combines the expertise, vision and experience in leadership and the cultural field that the Board of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet requires from the general director’, and chair Leena Niemistö described her as ‘a target-oriented, highly responsible visionary who leads through open communication and listening.’
‘I’m extremely motivated and enthusiastic about this unique opportunity,’ Kadambi said. ‘It feels amazing to be able to return to a place that, under Päivi Kärkkäinen’s leadership, has developed into an art institution of even higher quality and societal importance.’
A recruitment process is also underway for the new artistic director of the Finnish National Ballet, with Kenneth Greve’s term ending in summer 2018.
