Kaufmann cancellations due to vocal injury

9:55, 5th October 2016

Jonas Kaufmann has cancelled a number of performances due to a small burst blood vessel on his vocal cords.

The tenor has withdrawn from the Bayreische Staatsoper’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Opera Bastille’s Les Contes d’Hoffman, and has also postponed a Paris recital.

In a post on his website, Kaufmann stated that the burst blood vessel was the side effect of medication he had been taking, and that he needed to stop singing to avoid permanent damage.

‘I’m so sorry that my cancellations have been the source of a lot of disappointment and frustration over the past few weeks,’ he wrote. ‘Of course, I can understand the irritation of all those who had organised the expensive trips to come and listen to me. Unfortunately, the performance of a voice of singer cannot be guaranteed and sometimes a singer is facing events that require it to take a long rest.’

He thanked those who had wished him a speedy recovery.
