Nevill Holt Opera to unveil new theatre10:43, 5th December 2017
Nevill Holt Opera will open its new theatre in June 2018.
Developed within the stable block courtyard, the new 400-seat theatre has been designed by Witherford Watson Mann in conjunction with Sound Space Vision (Koerner Concert Hall, Toronto; Winspear Opera House, Dallas).
Artistic director Nicholas Chalmers said: ‘For four years, Nevill Holt Opera has been staging the highest quality productions in its intimate stable-yard theatre. The prospect of a new opera house to support this excellent work is such an exciting development, and will help promote the east Midlands as a destination for the arts.’
The 2018 festival will launch with a new production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, conducted by Nicholas Chalmers, directed by Joe Austin and designed by Simon Kenny. James Newby will make his debut in the role of Count, while Lawson Anderson will sing the role of Figaro. The cast will also include Sky Ingram as the Countess, Aoife Miskelly as Susanna, and Joan Rodgers as Marcellina, and the production will also mark the beginning of NHO’s new partnership with the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
The festival will continue with the first revival of Antony McDonald’s production of Adès’ Powder her Face, originally created for Northern Ireland Opera. Following the festival, Le Nozze di Figaro will tour to Sage Gateshead, home of Royal Northern Sinfonia, for two performances in July.
General booking for the 2018 season opens in February.
