Operalia 2017 finalists announced

The finalists for the 2017 Operalia Competition, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, have been announced.

The singers will perform under the baton of Plácido Domingo, accompanied by the Astana Opera Symphony Orchestra, on 29 July. They are:

  • Vlada Borovko, soprano, Russia, 29
  • Rupert Enticknap, countertenor, UK, 30
  • Davide Giusti, tenor, Italy, 30
  • Leon Kim, baritone, South Korea, 30
  • Ruslana Koval, soprano, Ukraine, 27
  • Kristina Mkhitaryan, soprano, Russia, 30
  • Maria Mudryak, soprano, Kazakhstan, 23
  • Emmett O’Hanlon, baritone, USA, 27
  • So Young Park, soprano, South Korea, 31
  • Boris Prýgl, bass-baritone, Czech Republic, 25
  • Oksana Sekerina, soprano, Russia, 30
  • Levy Sekgapane, tenor, South Africa, 26
  • Adela Zaharia, soprano, Romania, 29
  • Sooyeon Lee, soprano, South Korea, 28

The finalists of the Zarzuela category are:

  • Marco Ciaponi, tenor, Italy, 27
  • Leon Kim, baritone, South Korea, 30
  • Damiana Mizzi, soprano, Italy, 32
  • Levy Sekgapane, tenor, South Africa, 26
  • Adela Zaharia, soprano, Romania, 29

The singers will compete for a share of the $180,000 prize fund. In addition to first, second and third prizes for male and female voices, the competition also offers the Birgit Nilsson Prize for performance of repertoire by Wagner and Strauss, the Pepita Embil de Domingo and Placido Domingo Sr. prizes for the best zarzuela performance, and the Audience Award.

The jury includes Jonathan Friend, artistic administrator of the Metropolitan Opera; Dominique Meyer, director of the Wiener Staatsoper; Peter Katona, casting director of the Royal Opera House; and Joan Matabosch, artistic director of the Teatro Real.

Operalia was founded in 1993 by Plácido Domingo to discover and help launch the careers of the most promising young opera singers of today. Although he does not vote, Domingo supervises proceedings and offers artistic and career advice to all of the participants.
