For the student or young professional, the rewards of winning a music competition go far beyond the prize money. They can provide a life-changing career boost: the likes of Murray Perahia, Bryn Terfel, Kristian Zimmerman and Thomas Quasthoff would no doubt have succeeded as musicians one way or another, but would they be household names without their competition exposure?
Along with such top-level competitions, however, there are hundreds of events worldwide - from the parochial to the international; from discipline specific to more general; offering prize money, recording contracts, engagements, promotion - the range is vast.
The guide contains articles offering advice on those considering entering competitions, interviews with competition winners and organisers, and reports from various competitions of particular interest. It also includes detailed listings of over 300 UK and international events
