Playwright Poppy Corbett to run London marathon for Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Trust

2:26, 30th January 2017

It’s not often that you hear about theatrical charities participating in the London marathon – but the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon will see in April the Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Trust (Masterclass) being represented on the 26.2-mile route.

As one of the 500 charities with people running for them, Masterclass has announced that playwright Poppy Corbett will be representing them at the marathon. In 2013, Corbett staged the West End debut of her play Hatchling at the theatre as a winner of the inaugural ‘Pitch Your Play’ scheme. She said of the news: ‘I’ve always believed in helping people further down the ladder and running the marathon for Masterclass would give me the opportunity to do so in a practical way.’ As well as with Masterclass, runners for The Lyric and Chickenshed will also be participating in the marathon.

Masterclass offers opportunities to young people aged 16-30, and their workshops are free to attend – though work can only continue with the support of donations and sponsors. Programme director Blayne George affirmed that ‘Masterclass stands firm as a place which will always support young people in the early stages of their theatrical career.’

Corbett added: ‘Masterclass changed things for me and I’d like to change things for them too.’ She is looking to raise £2,000; donations can be made here: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserPage.action?userUrl=PoppyCorbett&pageUrl=3
