Choral Evensong celebrates 90th anniversary

4:40, 6th October 2016

Choral Evensong will celebrate its 90th anniversary on 7 October.

The programme, which is the longest-running outside broadcast in the BBC’s history, has presented live weekly broadcasts of Evensongs from around the country since October 1926, initially on the National Programme, before moving to Radio 3 in 1970.

Last week, Choral Evensong broadcast live from Westminster Abbey, marking the first ever broadcast of Choral Evensong (also from the Abbey, on 7 October 1926). The programme is still available on iPlayer Radio.

Radio 3 controller Alan Davey said he had ‘no doubt’ that the programme would continue for many more years to come.
