Choral premiere commemorates Battle of the Somme

Three Surrey choirs will give the world premiere of Ian Assersohn’s Dies Irae, written to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

The piece presents imagines the Battle through the eyes of its combatants and those they left at home.

It will receive its first performance at a gala concert at Dorking Halls on 26 November by Leatherhead Choral Society, Epsom Male Voice Choir and Farnham Youth Junior Choir, soloists Sarah Leonard and Richard Bannan, and the Camerata of London, all conducted by the composer.

The concert will also feature the ‘Pie Jesu’ from Fauré’s Requiem and Elegy In Memoriam Rupert Brooke by Frederick Kelly, who was killed during the Battle.
