James Hicks’s excellent and pioneering exploration of the Scandinavian organ world continues with Danish anthologies in 19th- and early 20th-century idioms (CD1), and contemporary idioms (many pieces having been specially commissioned by Hicks) on CD2. The selection, well played and recorded on two fine instruments, serves to present new repertory to many organists. CD1 features suites and fantasias by Benna Moe, J.P.E. Hartmann, Gustav Adolf Mankell, Gottfred Matthison-Hansen, Finn Viderø’s Passacaglia and Carl Nielsen’s iconic Commotio. The second CD champions works by Lise Dynnsen, Knud Jeppeson, Leif Thybo, Tore Bjørn Larsen, Kjell Mørk Karlsen, Bernhard Christensen and two pieces by Christian Praestholm based on folk tunes, with a colourful amalgam of pan-tonal harmonies.
