Peter Hurford dies at 88

British organist and composer Peter Hurford OBE has died aged 88.

Hurford was founder of the St Albans International Organ Festival, former master of the music at St Albans Cathedral and an internationally renowned concert organist and recording artist. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2008, retiring formally from performing in 2009. He died peacefully on 3 March 2019.

Best known for his interpretations of Bach, he recorded the complete Bach organ works in the 1970s, his largest recording project.

St Albans International Organ Festival will be holding a memorial event at St Albans Cathedral, details of which they will announce in due course.
