The bid to host the World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) 2023 has been won by Qatar, following a successful campaign by Qatar National Choral Association and Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC).

As the International Federation of Choral Music’s (IFCM) flagship event, the Symposium is held every three years, with 2020’s event taking place in Auckland, New Zealand. It is considered to be the world’s most prestigious non-competitive choral event, inviting choirs, conductors, choristers, speakers and other practitioners to perform and take part in workshops, masterclasses and discussions.

On the announcement of the winning 2023 bid, the IFCM stated, ‘We are looking forward to an exciting exploration of the musical treasures of the Middle East and Central Asia. The Symposium in Qatar provides IFCM and the hosts with the opportunity to create a new network and enhance exchange and cooperation within and beyond this area.’

The WSCM has taken place every three years since 1987 and brings choral music to countries across the globe, with previous host cities including Barcelona, Copenhagen, Kyoto, Minneapolis, Sydney, Helsinki and Vienna.

In 2020, the event in Auckland will welcome 24 world-class choirs and over 40 choral practitioners to the stage. Advance booking is open now and standard registration opens in January.
