Watch: preview of a new work for Sing for Pleasure11:52, 2nd August 2018
The national choral charity Sing for Pleasure (SfP) has commissioned a new choral work by British composer Thomas Hewitt Jones, to be premiered as part SfP’s summer school.
‘When SfP commissioned me to write a 12-part choral work for them, I immediately felt that the piece needed to be positive and uplifting,’ said Hewitt Jones. ‘These seems to be so much that’s dark in the world at the moment that people have a hunger for goodness, light and integrity.’
The piece is a collaboration with lyricist Jasmine Birtles, who added: ‘So much in art is dark and ‘edgy’ that we wanted to redress the balance a bit with this work.’
The work, entitled Greater Love: The 12 Ways of Goodness, will premiere during SfP’s summer school at Keele University in August, and will be the focus of study for the school’s advanced conducting course.
The first public performance will be given on the final night of the charity’s free-to-attend concert series in Keele University Chapel on 18 August.
