World Choir Games head to New Zealand in 2024

9:40, 5th January 2021

The 13th edition of the World Choir Games will take place in Auckland, New Zealand in 2024.

It will be the first time that the world’s largest choir competition is held in Australasia, previous editions having taken place in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. In July 2024, choirs from around the world will come together in Auckland for various competitions, artistic workshops, collaborative concerts and cultural exchange.

Gunter Titsch, president of Interkultur and the World Choir Games, said: ‘In times of great uncertainty for choral music around the world, it’s my huge pleasure to announce the World Choir Games 2024 and provide the choral world with planning dependability for the future. In 2024 we will break new ground and look forward to bringing our event to a unique region of the world.’

New Zealand’s musical traditions reflect the diversity of its multicultural population, encompassing Māori, Pacific and European styles. ‘New Zealand is a singing nation with a thriving choral scene,’ said Juliet Dreaver, chair of the New Zealand Choral Federation. ‘We are proud to showcase our vibrant, diverse singing cultures to the world, including the powerful Māori tradition of kapa haka and the captivating choral styles of the Pacific.’

Hon Carmel Sepuloni, New Zealand’s minister for arts, culture and heritage, highlighted that at a time when global travel remains disrupted by the Covid pandemic, it was exciting to look forward to an ‘international celebration of song’ with choirs from over 50 nations. ‘Music is a language that crosses all boundaries, creating harmony both real and symbolic.’

The 11th edition of the World Choir Games was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 in Flanders, Belgium, but was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. The 12th edition in 2022 will be held in Gangneung, Korea.
