A number of leading artists will assemble for a performance of Tippett’s A Child of Our Time to raise funds for Refugee Council and its work with unaccompanied children arriving in Britain having fled war, trafficking and persecution.
The concert will take place on 15 January 2018 at the Royal Festival Hall. Edward Gardner will conduct Sophie Bevan, Alice Coote, Toby Spence and Brindley Sherratt with members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, and the programme will also include a performance of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto, with Hilary Hahn as soloist.
More than 3,000 children sought refuge in the UK in 2016. These children were forced to flee their homes due to conflict, political instability or persecution, and arrived in UK alone. The Refugee Council’s Children’s Section works to safeguard and improve the lives of these children.
‘People often talk about the power of music to change lives, so it’s great to have the opportunity to put our skills on the concert stage to use for such an excellent cause,’ said Edward Gardner. ‘It’s heartbreaking to consider the depth of trauma and the challenges endured by so many child refugees through no fault of their own and I’m pleased to be involved in something that may make some difference to their lives.’
All of the musicians and concert organisers are giving their time and energy to this cause for free. Tickets cost £15-£75, and are now on sale.
