Andrea Bocelli Foundation and Community Jameel launch RCM scholarship

12:42, 26th November 2019

The Andrea Bocelli Foundation (ABF) and Community Jameel have launched an international scholarship at London’s Royal College of Music.

Created to help talented students overcome barriers to accessing world-class music education as part of the RCM’s More Music campaign, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation-Community Jameel scholarship will be awarded based on merit and need in order to support RCM students – with a preference for singers – through their full-time studies.

The announcement was made during a visit to RCM by the founders of the philanthropic organisations: ABF founder and world renowned singer Andrea Bocelli, and Community Jameel founder Mohammed Jameel KBE. The visit included a performance by young singers from RCM’s training centre for opera stars in-the-making, RCM Opera Studio.

Andrea Bocelli founded ABF in 2011 with the aim of empowering people and communities and breaking down the barriers that they face in reaching their potential. Earlier this year at the Winter in Tantora Festival in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, Bocelli explained that he had been inspired by Mohammed Jameel and the work of Community Jameel, which focuses on creativity, entrepreneurship, innovation and youth.

Maestro Bocelli described himself as ‘thrilled’ about the establishment of the new partnership, commenting: ‘The Andrea Bocelli Foundation believes that music education can become an integral part of the lives of children and youth. In fact, the Foundation’s staff and volunteers work tirelessly to include and promote world-class programmes and methodologies that leverage music as a powerful tool to promote the discovery and full expression of the self.’

Fady Jameel, President, International of Community Jameel says: ‘With our goal of innovating for a better future, we have found in the Royal College of Music a global institution taking a creative approach to delivering musical education for all … We look forward to future Andrea Bocelli Foundation-Community Jameel scholars attaining the highest peaks of musical accomplishment.’

RCM director Professor Colin Lawson adds: ‘We are extremely grateful to the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and Community Jameel for their strong commitment to the Royal College of Music’s More Music Campaign … One of the More Music Campaign’s key aims is to make musical education available to all; philanthropic partnerships such as this are vital to this vision.’
