Applications are now open for LPO Junior Artists 2019/2010:47, 5th April 2019
LPO Junior Artists, the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s programme for talented young musicians from backgrounds currently under-represented in professional UK orchestras, is currently accepting applications for the 2019/20 season.
The year-long programme offers a range of experiences to aspiring young musicians. These include mentoring from LPO musicians, visits from inspiring external guests, professional skills-building workshops, mock audition experience, ensemble performance projects, administrative work experience, concert and rehearsal visits, and activities with children to inspire an even younger generation through the ‘LPO Junior Artists: Overture’ strand.
Through this scheme, the orchestra hopes to address the fact that certain backgrounds are still under-represented in the UK professional classical music sector, aiming to promote diversity and inclusivity in orchestral music in order to work toward an industry that is more reflective of the wider population.
Applications are currently open to anyone aged 15 – 18, playing an orchestral instrument to at least grade 8 standard and from a background that is currently under-represented in professional UK orchestras either due to financial, cultural or practical barriers, or existing unconscious or conscious bias within the sector. Eligible criteria may include, but are not limited to, under-represented racial, ethnic or socio-economic backgrounds, and may also include gender, disability and special educational needs.
The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday 3 May 2019. On Saturday 27 April at the Royal Festival Hall at 6pm there will be an opportunity to hear current members of the programme performing alongside LPO musicians and Junior Artists alumni, where members of the LPO Education & Community team will be available to answer any questions about the scheme.
