There is some remarkable playing here. If this Franco-German musician was better known for his recordings of French repertoire, especially Debussy, the other side to his heritage is often neglected. He was a fine Bach player, and his straightforward, stylishly beautiful playing suits the composers herein. He combines passionate and piercing intensity, turning on a sixpence between these extremes in Carnaval. His Kinderszenen is similarly impressive, if appropriately more measured, and an earlier Brahms set reveals a true colourist. Listeners unfamiliar with his Schubert, here the Impromptus and Moments musicaux, will find a direct, unsentimental approach that suits the music perfectly. Lovingly remastered.
