Buxton International Festival cancelled for 2020

3:54, 18th March 2020

Buxton International Festival has taken the decision to cancel its 2020 festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been announced today.

The festival’s CEO Michael Williams said that the decision to cancel the event for the first time in 40 years was taken with ‘great regret’, but that it would be impossible to deliver a festival this summer under current circumstances. He commented: ‘The government’s scientific advice makes it clear that the peak of this dreadful epidemic is still ahead of us and we have no means of knowing what the position will be by July.

‘Buxton International Festival brings the very best artists, writers and musicians to Buxton every summer. We are determined to secure our festival for the future and would like to thank our friends, the foundation, our sponsors and supporters, our local authority, businesses, the Arts Council of England, our staff and our volunteers, all of whom will work to ensure that the Buxton International Festival and the artists on whom it depends will be able to mount our much-loved Festival next year and in the future.’

Buxton International Festival was due to take place from 3 – 19 July 2020. The festival dates for 2021 are 2 – 18 July.
