CBSO appoints new assistant conductor

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has appointed Jaume Santonja Espinós assistant conductor.

Santonja Espinós was chosen by a panel of judges and orchestra members after participating in conducting masterclasses with Johannes Schlaefli, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla’s former teacher. Almost 150 people applied for the position from all over the world.

Santonja Espinós is currently principal percussionist at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and since the 2016-17 season has been assistant conductor of the Orquesta de Extremadura in Spain.

He succeeds Jonathan Bloxham, who has held the position since 2016.
