Ex Cathedra announces 2017/18 season

10:03, 2nd August 2017

Ex Cathedra’s 2017/18 season will feature repertoire ranging from Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers with His Majesty’s Sagbutts & Cornetts to new works by Roxanna Panufnik and Alec Roth.

The ensemble will be joined by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) as it opens the season with a programme of Bach, featuring two Magnificats, the third orchestral suite, and the cantatas Christ lag in Todesbanden and Ein feste Burg.

In a second collaboration with the CBSO, Ex Cathedra will perform a programme of music written for the sopranos who inspired Mozart, with alumni Carolyn Sampson and Elizabeth Cragg appearing as soloists.

The ensemble will also welcome Toby Spence, James Rutherford and a cast of young professional singers for a Good Friday performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at Symphony Hall.

Leading up to Holy Week, the Ex Cathedra Consort will present ‘Harmonic Spiritual Theatre’, a Lenten programme of early oratorios featuring Carissimi’s Jephte and Charpentier’s Le reniement de St Pierre.

The season also includes Ex Cathedra’s popular Christmas Music by Candlelight and Summer Music by Candlelight concerts.

Tickets start at £13 (full-time students and under 17s £5; those aged 18-30 and not in full-time education £8).
