Ex Cathedra presents Christmas Music by Candlelight4:04, 4th December 2019
Ex Cathedra is to tell the story of its 50-year history in a series of concerts this winter, Christmas Music by Candlelight.
The choir will embark on 13 concerts beginning this evening (4 December 2019, Hereford Cathedral) until 22 December, featuring familiar music alongside new commissions and premieres. This year’s programme combines music from ten centuries, from Hildegard of Bingen, Tallis and Bach to pieces composed by ten living composers including close associates of Ex Cathedra: Alec Roth, Liz Johnson and John Joubert, who died earlier this year.
Reflecting on the ensemble’s conception 50 years ago, founder and artistic director Jeffrey Skidmore comments: ‘This was the summer of 69 – what a summer! 50 years ago… Moon landings, Woodstock, flower power, ‘make love not war’, A-levels, entrance exams… and, with the help of several lifelong friends, I founded Ex Cathedra.
‘Christmas music has always been at the heart of Ex Cathedra’s work. The concerts tell the story of the season in its broadest and most wide-ranging interpretation – love, peace, joy, birth, justice and a subversive redistribution of wealth, shepherds, kings, angels, stars – in the most engaging sequence of music.’
Performances will take place in Hereford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Hagley, London, Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham. A live stream will also be available to watch on Ex Cathedra’s Facebook page at 7.30pm on Sunday 21 December.
