Gramophone has today (Tuesday 11 June 2019) announced the ten ensembles shortlisted for its Orchestra of the Year Award, to be presented at the 2019 Gramophone Awards.
Presented with Apple Music, the award recognises ensembles that have made significant recorded contributions within the past year. The winner will be chosen by public vote and announced at the Gramophone Awards ceremony on Wednesday 16 October, which will be streamed live on medici.tv.
The nominees for 2019 are:
- Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
- Staatskapelle Berlin
- Boston Symphony Orchestra
- Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra
- Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra
- Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
- London Symphony Orchestra
- Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
- San Francisco Symphony
- Les Siècles
Last year’s award, won by the Seattle Symphony, attracted over 24,000 votes and this number is expected to rise this year with the introduction of specially created Apple Music playlists. Each orchestra will have its own playlist featuring recent recordings and classics from its catalogue, as well as a regularly updated playlist featuring all ten ensembles.
Gramophone Editor in Chief James Jolly said: ‘The first ever Orchestra of the Year Award last year captured the imaginations of more than 20,000 music lovers from all over the world, and propelled the Seattle Symphony to victory. This year Gramophone has shortlisted ten ensembles who have made a huge impact over the last year, invariably thanks to a special dynamism between conductor and players. Guided by some superb recordings, we’ve highlighted ten magnificent ensembles. Just head to Apple Music to listen to the playlists and cast your vote.’
Readers can vote via the Gramophone website until midnight on 7 September.
