Major new festival for Latvia announced

1:56, 30th November 2018

The inaugural Riga Jurmala Music Festival will be held in the Latvian capital in the summer of 2019.

The festival will be based around four weekends, each anchored by a leading international orchestra and conductor. The 2019 edition will feature the Bavarian Radio Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, the London Symphony and the Russian National Orchestras.

Soloists will include Murray Perahia, Yuja Wang and Seong-Jin Cho, Vadim Repin and Mischa Maisky.

The festival will be headed by artistic director Martin Engstroem, the founder of the Verbier Festival. He said the event aimed to ‘offer the local population the very best artists and orchestras in classical music and, at the same time, try to convince the travelling music lover to discover Riga and Jurmala.’

He continued: ‘I greatly look forward to developing these ideas with the Foundation and the public of Latvia. We will use our connections and long experience in presenting classical music events to help position the Riga Jurmala Music Festival as a top event and attractive destination for the stars of classical music.’

The festival is supported by the BMS Foundation, a philanthropic body dedicated to creating world-class classical music events in Latvia.

Full details and booking information will be announced in February 2019.
