NYO announces Chris Riddell as artist in residence

10:43, 18th December 2017

The National Youth Orchestra has named Chris Riddell as artist in residence.

His illustrations will be incorporated into the NYO’s performances of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, and his live drawings will be streamed during one performance.

Bluebeard’s Castle will be the first complete opera performance in NYO’s 70-year history. The semi-staged production will be directed by Daisy Evans, and NYO musicians will be immersed in the story, text and themes through theatre workshops.

Young actors from the National Youth Theatre will add to the theatrical presentation, and the concerts in Nottingham and London will be accompanied by special receptions for teenage audiences, run by teenage musicians.

Bluebeard’s Castle will be part of a programme including Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake and Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Performances will take place in Manchester (5 January), Nottingham (6 January) and London (7 January), conducted by Sir Mark Elder.
