Rafael Payare renews with Ulster Orchestra

5:10, 3rd October 2016

Rafael Payare has renewed his contract with the Ulster Orchestra until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Appointed as chief conductor in September 2014, he will take the title of music director with the 2017/18 season.

The new title is given ‘in recognition of Rafael’s rapport with the players, the tremendous reception that the people of Northern Ireland have given him and the incredible impact that he has made on concerts’, according to Ulster Orchestra managing director Richard Wigley.

The announcement came at the end of the orchestra’s 50th birthday week, during which Payare conducted a concert at the Ulster Hall to mark the occasion.

Payare said he was ‘thrilled’ at the prospect of continuing his relationship with the orchestra.

‘Across the next few seasons we will continue to explore a vast amount of repertoire and there are exciting plans in 2017-18 to perform on the international stage as the orchestra and I are planning our first European tour together.’

He said that the orchestra’s performance at this year’s Proms had played an important part in his decision to extend the relationship, adding: ‘The commitment and high level of playing was outstanding.’
