8:22, 21st May 2018

19-year-old cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason performed Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’, Fauré’s ‘Après un rêve’ and Maria Theresia von Paradis’ Sicilienne at the royal wedding on 19 May.

He became the first classical musician to take over the official Instagram Stories account, which is followed by 235 million people. He shared videos and photos of his preparations for the performance, as well as behind-the-scenes photos and clips from the event.

‘It was such an awesome moment,’ he commented. ‘The atmosphere was amazing and I’m proud to have played a small part in the celebrations. It’s a day I will remember for the rest of my life.’

CNN described his playing as ‘breathtaking’, and Esquire called him ‘a cello rockstar’.

The official recording of the wedding will soon be made available on streaming services, and will be released as a physical album on 25 May.
