Applications are now open for the 2020 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. The competition is open to pianists of any nationality aged 11-14 (Junior) and 15-18 (Young Artist).

Video applications submitted online will be screened to select candidates for next year’s finals, which take place 14-20 June (Junior) and 21-27 June (Young Artist) at Salt Lake City’s Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. The international jury chair is pianist and pedagogue Alvin Chow, who also heads the piano department at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.

The Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition was formerly hosted by Brigham Young University but relocated to Salt Lake City in 1980 under the patronage of the Utah Symphony. The competition is held biennially during June, alternating between prizes for young artists and international performers. Since its launch in 1976, more than 1,000 pianists from 40 countries have taken part. Past laureates include Andrey Gugnin, Lukas Geniusas, Vadym Kholodenko, Luiza Borac, Nicholas Angelich, Ilya Itin, Yundi Li and George Li.

The competition takes its name from the Greek pianist Gina Bachauer (1913-1976) who was a celebrated favorite of Utah audiences and appeared on several occasions with the Utah Symphony under conductor Maurice Abravanel.
