A virtual first round of the Busoni Competition in Paris
Busoni Competition announces finalists for 202110:33, 27th November 2020
The Busoni International Piano Competition has announced 33 finalists for its 2021 edition after the first rounds of the competition were held online
In partnership with Steinway & Sons, the competition ran the ‘Glocal Piano Project’ in place of live first rounds to overcome the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ninety-three candidates made video recordings of their first-round programme in Steinway & Sons showrooms in their countries of residence. The videos were broadcast 48 hours later to the jury and an online audience.
The jury – comprised of Elmar Weingarten (Chair), Saleem Ashkar, Davide Cabassi, Milana Chernyavska, Michail Lifits, Staffan Scheja and Minsoo Sohn – selected 25 participants to progress to the final rounds of the competition in Bolzano next August. A further six finalists were selected by an audience vote: between 19 and 26 November, 19,663 viewers voted for up to three candidates they wished to see in the finals.
All the first-round videos are available to watch online until September 2021 at concorsobusoni.it, eu.steinway.com and, for the Chinese audience, amadeus.tv. So far the videos have amassed 418,000 views at the competition’s central website, 4,500 via the Steinway website and 60,000 via Amadeus TV.
