A film exploring the legacy of Romanian-Swiss pianist Clara Haskil (1895-1960) has been released on DVD in France

Clara Haskil – Le mystère de l’interprète attempts to unravel what made Haskil one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, renowned for her poetic interpretations. The documentary features contributions from leading personalities in the world of music, including Christian Zacharias, Michel Dalberto and Michael Garady.

Bonus features include a behind-the-scenes interview with Martha Argerich, excerpts from the finalists’ concerts at the 2015 Clara Haskil Competition, and archival footage such as Russian pianist Nikita Magaloff recounting his experiences with Haskil, Dinu Lipatti and Pablo Casals.

The box set also includes a 52-page book and CD of previously unpublished recordings produced by Haskil expert and former France Musique journalist Alain Lompech. Beautifully remastered by Isabelle Davy, this disc features rare gems such as Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under Carlo Maria Giulini, Liszt’s Gnomenreigen and a recital captured by Charlie Chaplin at his home on the banks of Lake Geneva, Manoir de Ban, where Haskil plays Schumann, Daquin, Scarlatti and Beethoven.
