20-year-old Bulgarian pianist Emanuil Ivanov was awarded first prize at the 2019 Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy
Ivanov, a student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, sealed his victory with a performance of Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No 2. Second prize went to Japanese pianist Shiori Kuwahara and third prize to Georgian pianist Giorgi Gigashvili.
The Busoni competition was founded in 1949 by Cesare Nordio, then director of the Conservatory of Bolzano, to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of pianist, composer and writer Ferruccio Busoni. Past winners of the competition include Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Richard Goode and Maurizio Pollini.
Ivanov has previously won first prize in competitions including the Jeunesses International Music Competition Dinu Lipatti, and in May 2019 was awarded both second prize and audience prize at the Alessandro Casagrande International Piano Competition in Italy. He currently studies with Pascal Nemirovski and Anthony Hewitt in Birmingham.
