Steinway unveils new Limited Edition grand12:40, 30th October 2020
Steinway & Sons has announced the launch of its new Limited Edition piano, the Kravitz Grand, in collaboration with American rock musician Lenny Kravitz
Kravitz, who is also the founder of a design studio, is the latest in a series of artists and designers to collaborate with the piano manufacturer on its Limited Edition range. The Kravitz Grand is a Model B instrument with a design inspired by African themes employed in paintings, sculpture and fabric design from the 1920s Paris art scene.
The piano is comprised of 15 layers of hard rock maple and rare Macassar ebony selected by Kravitz for the exterior. Hand-carved motifs feature on the piano rim, inner lid and music desk. Other notable design elements include the hand-carved, block-style piano legs in black ebony finish, the ‘crackle’ metallic finish on the cast iron plate, and solid bronze castings for the top stick and pedal lyre. The piano keys are in ebony and matte cream, and the piano bench features Macassar ebony and a faux cheetah print fabric.
Ten Kravitz Grands, each equipped with Steinway’s Spirio | r high-resolution player piano, have been produced for the Limited Edition series. Each piano retails at $500,000.
Kravitz said: ‘The first instrument I ever played was a Steinway. I have been a fan of their pianos over the span of my 30-year career, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to design my dream piano. I put my heart and soul into every design element and I’m thankful to work with a partner who let me create something that was so personal to me.’
Ron Losby, CEO of Steinway Musical Instruments, said: ‘The Kravitz Grand is one of the most interesting takes on a 167-year-old classic design. Everyone involved in designing and building this piano really had to push the boundaries and create something unlike any designs in the past. This collaboration with Lenny allowed us to put a unique spin on the design of our pianos.’
