Sophie Lewis appointed as NCO managing director

10:37, 3rd November 2017

Sophie Lewis has been appointed as managing director of the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain. She will step down from her current role as chief executive of Sinfonia Cymru to succeed Carrie Sage, who is stepping down at the end of this year.

Lewis has overseen significant growth across all areas of Sinfonia Cymru’s work since becoming chief executive in 2006. In 2011, the orchestra became the first and only revenue funded chamber orchestra in Wales; she received the inaugural ABO/Rhinegold Orchestra Manager of the Year Award in recognition of this achievement. She has developed strategic partnerships with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Young Classical Artists Trust as well as launching a new model, website and brand for the orchestra.

She is a board member of the ABO and Presteigne Festival. Previous experience includes positions at Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and the Arts Council of England.

Dr Peter Stark, chair of trustees, described Lewis’s track record at Sinfonia Cymru as ‘truly impressive’. He continued: ‘Sophie will be building on already secure foundations, and this formidable team will provide the talented children of this exceptional organisation with an even stronger learning and performing experience.’

Lewis said: ‘It is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to lead NCO at such an exciting time in its development. I am deeply passionate about the extraordinary benefits of music making for young people and can’t wait be part of the next chapter of such a wonderful organisation that already does so much for young musicians.’
