Applications open for Dallas Opera Guild Vocal Competition

The Dallas Opera Guild Vocal Competition is now accepting applications for the 2018 contest.

The competition is open to residents of all 50 states and US Territories, including international students attending American colleges, universities, and music conservatories, and eligible are active members of any young artist programme associated with an American opera company. Although it is primarily for artists aged between 18 and 34 years, singers of any age may apply and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applications must be submitted via YAP Tracker by 11:59pm (Central Time) on 20 November.

The semi-finals will take place on 27 April 2018 at 11am, and the finals will take place in the Winspear Opera House at 7:30pm on 28 April 2018 as part of the Dallas Opera’s annual Springs Gala. Up to six finalists will perform two arias each, accompanied by the Dallas Opera Orchestra and conducted by Emmanuel Villaume.

Judges will include Keith Cerny, the Dallas Opera’s general director and CEO, and music director Emmanuel Villaume, and the judging panel will be chaired by Dr Brian Zeger.


Alumni of the competition include Latonia Moore, Clifton Forbis, Marjorie Owens, Weston Hurt, Steven LaBrie, Amanda Woodbury, Jesus Garcia, Anthony Clark Evans, Kang Wang, Virginie Verrez and, most recently, Samantha Hankey, Laura Wilde and Kihun Yoon.
