Royal Opera tours to Japan in September3:17, 10th June 2019
The Royal Opera returns to Japan in September 2019 as part of UK in Japan 2019-20, a series of UK-Japan exchanges jointly organised by the British Embassy Tokyo and the British Council
The opera company will present performances of David McVicar’s staging of Gounod’s Faust and Keith Warner’s production of Verdi’s Otello from 12 to 23 September. All performances will be conducted by the Royal Opera’s music director Antonio Pappano. The company last toured to Japan in autumn 2015.
The 2019 tour opens with Faust on 12th September at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Ueno Park. It features a cast including Italian tenor Vittorio Grigòlo in the title role, Italian bass-baritone Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as Méphistophélès and American soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Faust’s lover Marguerite. The production is set in 1870s Paris, drawing parallels between the experiences of Gounod and Faust, and highlighting the opera’s gothic elements.
Otello opens on 14th September at Kanagawa Kenmin Hall in Yokohama with a cast including American tenor Gregory Kunde in the title role, Armenian soprano Hrachuhi Bassenz as Desdemona and Canadian bass-baritone Gerald Finley as Iago. The production is characterised by semi-abstract sets by designer Boris Kudlička and period costumes by Kaspar Glarner.
