Soprano launches own record label1:08, 8th January 2019
The Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka has launched her first release on Prima Classic, the new independent record label that she has created to promote opera and recitals featuring world-class singers.
Rebeka plans to release up to four recordings annually, largely recorded with orchestras in different opera houses and concert halls across Europe. She has built a new studio in Latvia for mixing and mastering the projects that she aims to promote through the label.
For Spirito, her first album on the label, Rebeka has performed a collection of bel canto arias based on their original scores. The soprano travelled the world – visiting Milan, Stockholm, Paris, Chicago, New York and Rome – in search of the original manuscripts for each opera, as the basis of her interpretation, including works such as Bellini’s Norma and Il pirata, Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda and Spontini’s La vestale. Following the longstanding tradition of bel canto singers, she has also written her own ornamentations and improvisations around the vocal line.
